CEN

CEN European Committee for Standardization

CEN is the European Committee for Standardization, one of the three European Standards Organisations recognised under Directive EC/98/34. It covers standardization in areas other than the electrotechnical and communications fields.

In the fast-moving domain of information and communications technologies (ICT), CEN has created the Information Society Standardization System (CEN/ISSS) as a marketing tool. CEN/ISSS activities include traditional CEN Technical Committees, producing European Standards and other publications with the full involvement of national interests. In addition, CEN/ISSS makes extensive use of open Workshops which are open to all interested parties globally. The Workshops operate by consensus and produce specifications, pre-Standards, guidance and other material. Their deliverables are published by CEN as CEN Workshop Agreements (CWAs); those relating to eEurope, and certain others, are available free of charge on the Internet. CEN/ISSS Workshops are not permanent structures, but are created whenever there is an identified need.

CEN/ISSS activities mainly concern applications of technology, and eCommerce and eBusiness standardization is particularly important. CEN/ISSS is a user signatory of the ISO/IEC/ITU/UN-ECE MoU on e-Business standardization. In the field of RFID, CEN Technical Committee 225 (AIDC technologies) has established a dedicated Working Group at European level, and this is working closely in collaboration with ISO/IEC JTC1 SC31 on RFID standards. A number of projects are planned concerning European standards requirements on RFID applications.
